I attended the SF Bay Area Maker Faire again this year. Here are some of my favorite finds.

Shannon Chappell‘s Steampunk Rock Golem. Provided by Solarbotics Chappell noted, “I have made a Steampunk Rock Golem, conjured for either protection or destruction. A Golem is an animated creature created out of inanimate matter. In this instance a magical will was put into a pile of rocks and antique machine parts to bring this Golem to life.”

Michael Gard‘s Lift: Luminous Sculpture

Justin Kohn‘s Channelled Alien Mechanicals

About Michael Gard:

Michael Gard’s sculptures are created using a wire weaving technique he invented as a teenager. Each figure begins as a block of clay and a spool of wire. The clay is sculpted. This sculpture is reproduced in wax. Individual lengths of wire are woven and knotted stitch-by-stitch around the wax form. Finally the wax is melted away, leaving a rigid figure, both light and strong.

Since 2008 he has been incorporating LED lights into some of the work, and has used brightly colored enameled wires since 2011.

Michael was born in London in 1971, he moved to the US in 1994. He has maintained a full time sculpture studio since 1995. He resides in San Francisco with his wife Andrea and sons Milo and Felix.
