Larry Burgess, PhD

Dr. Burgess has several decades of experience in the wireless field. He possesses a combination of knowledge in adaptive signal processing, antenna design, smart antennas, radio links, transmitter/receiver design, radar, direction finding, and power amplifier linearization. He has worked in design, test, product development, and customer applications for military and commercial products covering 2 MHz to 30 GHz, which include Cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, FCC Part 15 (260-930 MHz), GPS, and military radar bands. Dr. Burgess holds a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from MIT and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He also provides wireless consulting services directly.

Dr. Burgess has worked in the Wireless field since 1972.

  • At Magnavox/Philips Government and Industrial Electronics, he analyzed, designed and tested adaptive antenna arrays and interference cancellers.
  • At Orbit/Flam & Russell, Inc., he led the design of reflector antennas, smart antenna arrays, direction finding systems, and Radar Cross-Section measurement systems.
  • At Zilog Corp., he incorporated signal processing IC’s into the first 900 MHz commercial cordless phones.
  • At startup companies like InterWave Communications and Conductus, he developed and field tested custom transceivers and front ends for Mobile phone networks using the GSM and CDMA standards.
  • At Maxim Integrated, he introduced several RFIC’s for license-free (802.15 and ETSI) applications such as remote car keys, tire pressure monitors, home security, and TV remote controls.
  • At Broadcom, he integrated adaptive digital pre-distortion IC’s into base station transmitters for existing and emerging cellular standards, including GSM, EDGE, CDMA, UMTS, and LTE.
